Office of Educational Technology. (2005). Toward a New Golden Age
in American Education: How the Internet, the Law and Today’s Students
are Revolutionizing Expectation. Washington, DC: U.S. Department
of Education.
Today’s students are often more tech-savvy than their teachers,
even among the youngest students. Similar findings are noted in the National
Education Technology Plan (http://www.nationaledtechplan.org/).
Fallows, D. (2005). Search engine users. Washington, DC: Pew
Internet and American Life Project. http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/146/report_display.asp
"Internet searchers are confident, satisfied and trusting - but they
are also unaware and naïve...Only 38% of users are aware of the distinction
between paid or 'sponsored' results and unpaid results. And only one in
six say they can always tell which results are paid or sponsored and which
are not. This finding is ironic, since nearly half of all users say they
would stop using search engines if they thought engines were not being
clear about how they presented paid results."
A decade of adoption: How the Internet has woven itself into American
life. (2005). In Trends 2005. Washington, DC: Pew Internet
and American Life Project. http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/148/report_display.asp
“A decade after browsers came into popular use, the Internet has
reached into–and, in some cases, reshaped–just about every
important realm of modern life. It has changed the way we inform ourselves,
amuse ourselves, care for ourselves, educate ourselves, work, shop, bank,
pray, and stay in touch.”
Teenagers on the web. (2005). Fremont, CA: Nielsen Norman Group.

Parents are savvier, more attentive and more successful Web searchers
and navigators than their teenaged children, according to a study by Nielsen
Norman Group, which sought information on marketing to teens online. Poor
reading skills, low motivation and lack of perseverance among teens lowered
the demographic's success rate in a variety of online navigational tasks.
